Flight Commander

Today when I was coming back into the office with a load of snackbar supplies (Oh the added joys of being an exec, snack-officer) my boss called me in to his office.  He kept his message short:  Instead of moving to the communications squadron in June as we’d planned, I’d be moving over on Monday.  WTF?  My first thoughts were that I was getting fired from my current job, but he explained to me that it wasn’t because I’d done a bad job, but only becuase of the current flux in personnel that this would be the perfect time for me to move.  I’m still not too sure that I have not been fired, but the job I’m moving in to is a flight commander position and that can ONLY be good for my career.

Normally I wouldn’t be hesitant about thinking of this as good news, but it still feels like I’ve been fired.

  • I’ll choose to interpret this as news of a promotion, and congratulate you!

  • Well, I don’t know about the military, but in the rest of the world when you get “fired” you no longer have a job. Maybe the other squadron found out how cool you are and decided they just couldn’t wait until June to have you. Besides, Flight Commander sounds like such a cool title. :-)

  • Um… Snack boy or Flight commander… I think Flight commander sounds MUCH cooler.

  • Here’s the way I see it, Pat. The Major board is gonna only see that you went from being an XO (dime-a-dozen) to a Flight Cdr (awesome!). I would look at it as a promotion. They probably figure, hey, we can get any ole schmuck to do this XO job (no offense to you or the job you’ve done), but here we’ve got this “known-quantity” high-performer that we can go ahead and put into a vacant flight cdr position. So I think it’ll only look good for you. Congrats!

  • I agree with them on this one. Congrats on the PROMOTION to Flight Commander. At Offutt we had 3 Capts as our flight commander. All three got promoted. :o)

  • But when will you be a Mech Commander?
