Thanksgiving and an Early Christmas

For Thanksgiving, the base served food from 10am until 8pm.  Since I was going off base for dinner, I made sure to get over to the chow hall for lunch.  The base leadership had volunteered to be the servers, so I made sure to go by when the wing commander was serving.  The command chief and a 1 star general I didnt know were also serving.  It was very kind of them.  :-)  The food was actually really good.  The best thing were the mashed potatoes which were fresh.  Theyd been peeling and mashing them since the morning before and they came out brilliantly.  It was good food and they even had egg nog!  Schweet!

Early last week, I was asked if Id be interested in leading a group of our Airmen off base for a Thanksgiving meal with the Chevron Corporation.  Not knowing much about the arrangements I still said yes as it sounded interesting.  Chevron had invited 25 Airmen from here to go there and have Thanksgiving dinner.  The base leadership wanted to make the trip available to our younger troops first, but needed someone in charge which was how I was invited to go along.  We loaded up 2 Suburbans and one 15 passenger van and headed out at around 2pm.  When we got there, we were surprised that it was at a Kuwaiti villa instead of the companys business office.  It turned out to be the head Chevron executives home in Kuwait City.  Three floors, crystal chandeliers and more marble than I could ever afford.  In addition to hosting us Airmen, there were also around 15 Marines and at least 10 Australian soldiers present.  With all of the Chevron people, I think there were around 75 people in attendance.  That should give you a better idea of the size of the villa.  Instead of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, we had a very eclectic meal.  There was Turkey, mashed potatoes and some cranberry sauce, but mostly it was just good food and lots of it.  I ate several plates of food and a couple plates of dessert until I was stuffed.  It was great fun.  We got back to the base at around 8pm and I headed straight to bed.  I was beat.

Christmas came a little early this year for me.  Yesterday I got a package from Amazon.com in the mail.  Scott had already told me that Id be getting an Amazon package from him, so I assumed that this was it.  I looked for an identifying mark of some kind to see if I should open it, but didnt find anything, so I opened it.  Inside I found a copy of Smallville Season 5 on DVD with a note saying, “Thank you for your service!”  I had posted a while back to a website where deployed troops could request DVDs and CDs, that I wanted Smallville Season 5, but I never expected to receive it.  It was a wonderful surprise and really made me happy.  Ive been sharing this with everybody around here and their spirits have all been uplifted.  After Im done with it Im going to donate it to the comm squadron here in the hopes that they can put it on our share drives for everybody to watch.  The first 4 seasons are already on there, so it shouldnt be too hard for them.  Thank you to JuliAnna Avila of Baton Rouge Louisiana!

Nothing Going On

There’s really nothing going on here. Seriously. It’s not quite as bad as what Ben’s going through in Afghanistan, but it is seriously boring. At least my journal is unblocked now. :-)

Boredom ahead, beware.

During some seriously boring time here, I’ve thought about a lot of things. For some reason, with the news of a possible Star Trek 11, I’ve been thinking about Star Trek 10, Nemesis, or how Star Trek learned to suck. Since there had been the trend through the former 9 movies of odd = bad, even = good, there was a lot of hope for this movie. Unfortunately, it is almost the worst of the bunch (5 still takes the cake though).

I was thinking, this movie really could have been a lot better. Here’s how:

1 – Get rid of Shinzon and all the Reman non-sense. Trek fans didn’t get excited because they were in the movie, but because the ROMULAN’s were.

2 – Since the main antagonist is now missing, we’ll need a new one. How about Sela? (That’s Alternate History Tasha Yar’s daughter) Like Kahn, she is a villain the characters are familiar with and feel a connection to. Picard feels guilty because he thinks he was responsible for sending Tasha there (though he wasn’t). Data also had quite the attachment to Tasha so with feelings he would probably feel connected through that as well as when his tactics defeated her in the episode Redemption Part 2. Worf was almost killed by the Duras sisters because of her involvement, he’d probably want some revenge. See how easy it is? The rest of the main characters could probably be interested simply because she’s related to Tasha. Not like they really had great motivation against the original bad guy anyway.

3 – You could still maintain your basic plot with Sela as the antagonist. She kills the senate and wants to kill all the humans since she REALLY hates them. Heck, you could probably even keep that wacky people eating weapon except they should rename it the Revelations Device. If they can call that device in Star Trek 2 the Genesis device, then wouldn’t this be its alter ego? See? Trekies live for nods towards Trek history.

4 – Use Ron Perlman effectively. He’s a badass, why not simply make him Romulan and head of the faction that’s behind Sela? See? Easy.

5 – Put the deleted scene from the DVD where Picard and Data talk about stuff. It’s called character development. You won’t feel anything for your characters if you don’t develop them!

6 – Take Riker out of the fight scene and replace him with Worf. Worf is WAY cooler in a fight than Riker.

7 – I’d rather say that Data shouldn’t die. This isn’t necessarily true though, that’s just my personal feelings. I think a better way to state this is to Kill Data in a way that actually makes it seem like he’s sacrificing himself for a good reason. True, he saved Picard, that’s great. I think a lot of people would have rather seen Data live though. Don’t get me wrong, I love Picard, but that was not an even trade.

8 – All the wacky stunts? Gone. No more ramming, no more space jump. Why put these things in? They just distract from the story. You don’t need them to make the movie more exciting, if you plan your space battle well, that will be exciting enough (again, see Star Trek 2).

That’s about all I’ve come up with so far. I’d love to hear if you agree/disagree and also any more suggestions you might have. Anything to relieve the boredom. :-)

Mouse

A little while ago I saw something move across the room from me. It was VERY fast but I thought what I’d seen was a mouse. Just now while I was sitting at my desk, a mouse was ON TOP of my desk trying to get to my malted milk balls. ON TOP OF MY DESK! Wow, it was quite startling, but I did not scream like a woman, it was almost kinda exciting. That frickin mouse is BOLD! I guess it’s mouse trap time.

Latest Happenings

The smartfilter is currently inactive, so I’m taking a quick moment to post. :-)

Ocktoberfest

As part of the morale and welfare program, the base leadership threw an Ocktoberfest celebration. There was a lot of advertising for it so I figured I’d check it out. They let us attend in civilian clothes which turned out to be the biggest morale boost they could have provided. I mostly went to check out the food. I wish I could say that I’d gone for the beer, but alas! The food served was a rump steak, bratwurst, fresh rolls and dessert. Everything was wonderful. They even had non-alcoholic German beer. I didn’t think it would be any good, but figured I’d try it. If I’d never had the alcoholic version, I’d have never known what I was missing as it too was wonderful. I really had a good time and so did everybody else. Best food I’ve had since I’ve been here!

Airport Trip

My boss recently left for the US for a couple of weeks. He asked me to go along with him to the airport. We took a few other people too as it’s safer to travel with several people. The trip there was almost as interesting as the airport itself. The first thing we noticed were a lot of flourescent lights out in the middle of nowhere. One of the people with us knew what they were: people camping. Apparently after Ramadan the big thing to do is go out into the desert and camp with your family. I wish I could have stopped and taken some pictures. There were a LOT of people camping. It was really facinating to me. There were even people who had just stopped on the side of the road and were sitting on the ground talking to each other. The rest of the drive was filled with the normal ooo’s and ahhhh’s of looking at stores, residences, etc in a foreign country. The best part of that was seeing the Third Country National housing. Each building was like a mini-apartment building, but each apartment looked to be housing WAY more people than it was designed to. It was terrible. Kuwait’s population is made up of 49% Kuwaiti and 51% Other. The others are people who have come into the country to work. I guess the Kuwaiti’s really are rich if none of them need to work…

I don’t know if I’m a world traveler or not, but I’ve now been to several airports all over the world. This one was again unique though. Instead of checking your bags in as soon as you enter the terminal, you actually have to proceed to the back of it where the enterance to the departure gates is. We couldn’t figure it out and I finally asked some guys with military haircuts if they could help us. That usually works. Before leaving I stopped at a newstand and picked up my roommate a couple magazines in Arabic (he’s teaching himself the language) and also a Starbucks. For a person who doesn’t drink coffee, I’ve sure been to a lot of them. :-)

Chuck Norris

This last Sunday under the Morale and Welfare flag, Chuck Norris visited us. You heard right, THE Chuck Norris was here across the hall from my office. Since I work for the group commander I’d thought I’d get a little more face time, but really, it was very fair to everybody. He stayed in the conference room and posed for pictures with anybody who wanted one. Marshall Teague, a bit actor, came along with him. At first I didn’t recognize him, but after checking IMDb I found that he’d played Ta’Lon on Babylon 5, another bit part, but memorable. Other guys remember him as the guy who gets beat up by Patrick Swayze in Road House. Here’s me with them.
Geek Time

Ever since Sharron moved to Japan we’ve been living with one computer. We knew that it wasn’t perfect, but we couldn’t afford a second one. She recently started working on her masters degree and we got a loan to pay for that. Harkening back to college days, she got her refund check and we immediately starting looking for a computer for her. Well, really, we’d been looking already, but now that we had money it was a whole different story. On Saturday I was checking out all the “deal” sites on the internet that I normally check (got a 2 gig thumb drive for $28 shipped!) and found a deal for a Dell laptop for $700ish dollars. I investigated further and found that it was really a coupon for 30% off any Dell laptop over $1,200. Wow. I immediately went to Dell’s webpage and virtually built the laptop. I called Sharron after looking at the price and we decided to buy it. The specs are below, but the final price was $1,257. Wow.
Intel® Coreâ„¢ 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB Cache/2.00GHz/667MHz FSB) w/17″ display
256MB ATI MOBILITYâ„¢ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory
80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with Double Layer DVD+R capability
Bluetooth
Wireless NIC with 802.11n

Missing Wife

The last thing I want to mention is that I’m seriously missing my wife. I knew it was going to be hard, but it’s been terrible. I have a hard time wondering how Ben is doing in Afganistan for a year away from his wife and thank God I only have to be here for 4 months. Today is my 56th day in Kuwait. At the most, I’ll be here for 73 more days, so not quite half way yet. Sharron and I have been able to talk on the phone a bunch and we’ve been keeping in touch over email and snail mail, but it really just doesn’t replace the face to face time we’d become so used to. I will never take that for granted again. I love you my wife, Mrs. Sharron Todd!
