There’s really nothing going on here. Seriously. It’s not quite as bad as what Ben’s going through in Afghanistan, but it is seriously boring. At least my journal is unblocked now. :-)
Boredom ahead, beware.
During some seriously boring time here, I’ve thought about a lot of things. For some reason, with the news of a possible Star Trek 11, I’ve been thinking about Star Trek 10, Nemesis, or how Star Trek learned to suck. Since there had been the trend through the former 9 movies of odd = bad, even = good, there was a lot of hope for this movie. Unfortunately, it is almost the worst of the bunch (5 still takes the cake though).
I was thinking, this movie really could have been a lot better. Here’s how:
1 – Get rid of Shinzon and all the Reman non-sense. Trek fans didn’t get excited because they were in the movie, but because the ROMULAN’s were.
2 – Since the main antagonist is now missing, we’ll need a new one. How about Sela? (That’s Alternate History Tasha Yar’s daughter) Like Kahn, she is a villain the characters are familiar with and feel a connection to. Picard feels guilty because he thinks he was responsible for sending Tasha there (though he wasn’t). Data also had quite the attachment to Tasha so with feelings he would probably feel connected through that as well as when his tactics defeated her in the episode Redemption Part 2. Worf was almost killed by the Duras sisters because of her involvement, he’d probably want some revenge. See how easy it is? The rest of the main characters could probably be interested simply because she’s related to Tasha. Not like they really had great motivation against the original bad guy anyway.
3 – You could still maintain your basic plot with Sela as the antagonist. She kills the senate and wants to kill all the humans since she REALLY hates them. Heck, you could probably even keep that wacky people eating weapon except they should rename it the Revelations Device. If they can call that device in Star Trek 2 the Genesis device, then wouldn’t this be its alter ego? See? Trekies live for nods towards Trek history.
4 – Use Ron Perlman effectively. He’s a badass, why not simply make him Romulan and head of the faction that’s behind Sela? See? Easy.
5 – Put the deleted scene from the DVD where Picard and Data talk about stuff. It’s called character development. You won’t feel anything for your characters if you don’t develop them!
6 – Take Riker out of the fight scene and replace him with Worf. Worf is WAY cooler in a fight than Riker.
7 – I’d rather say that Data shouldn’t die. This isn’t necessarily true though, that’s just my personal feelings. I think a better way to state this is to Kill Data in a way that actually makes it seem like he’s sacrificing himself for a good reason. True, he saved Picard, that’s great. I think a lot of people would have rather seen Data live though. Don’t get me wrong, I love Picard, but that was not an even trade.
8 – All the wacky stunts? Gone. No more ramming, no more space jump. Why put these things in? They just distract from the story. You don’t need them to make the movie more exciting, if you plan your space battle well, that will be exciting enough (again, see Star Trek 2).
That’s about all I’ve come up with so far. I’d love to hear if you agree/disagree and also any more suggestions you might have. Anything to relieve the boredom. :-)
