We tried to leave a store but our guide panicked and ran after us. She finally admitted she had to sign us in at every store and keep us there for a certain amount of time, in accordance with tourism law or something. Maybe she was making it up though because we told her we had a big tip waiting for her if she'd get the driver to take us elsewhere. I hear ya on the mandatory shopping.
