Being in Charge

It seems like it’s been a long time since I was in charge of anything.  It’s been more than a year since I moved into my current job and it’s the longest I’ve been in any job in the Air Force.  This week finds me as one of only 2 people in my office (of 6) and also in charge.  Mostly it hasn’t required too much extra work from me, but I have had to go to meetings.  Today we had a mini-exercise and I was asked to show up as my office’s functional expert.  Of course it was a lot more work than promised, but it was interesting.  What was weird was representing my office at a wing event and being the guy advising the wing commander.  Pretty cool.

One of the guys that outranks me is supposed to return from his deployment this weekend.  He’ll probably go on leave when he gets back, but it’s possible that he’ll want to come straight back to work.  If so, I’ll be back to 2nd bananna (instead of 5th, so still a move up).

Ironic Comments

It’s funny that Urn should comment that we try the “let them sort it out” approach as that’s exactly what we did last night.  Sharron had finally had enough and when I got home she opened the door to the office and let the two of them together.  So far so good.  Parker REALLY wants to sniff Fussa.

What really killed me was last night when I was trying to go to sleep both Parker and Fussa were being crazy.  Fussa was back in the office and kept banging the door and Parker was whining to go see Fussa.  It was Madness!  I finally put Fussa downstairs and into Parker’s crate.  That seemed to work well for the night and we may have to continue doing that.

Anyway, the search continues for a home for Fussa.

Heard this from the Wing Chaplain today, “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” - Teddy Roosevelt

Plus, the Command Chief said this, “We need to really focus on continuing our Analog leadership in this increasingly Digital world”

Cat

Last night Sharron and I got a cat.  One of her friends is moving and they aren’t taking the cat with them, so she offered to keep it until we can find it a new home.  His name is Fussa and he’s a Japanese Bobtail.  So far he’s been very nice to us and very wary of Parker.  Parker is very friendly himself and REALLY wants to be friends with Fussa.  Of course, Fussa is a bit nervous of Parker’s enthusiasm.  Parker loves to chase people, dogs, cats, birds, etc., and I think he wants to chase Fussa.  I have a feeling that Fussa will not like this very much.  Sharron and I had discussed keeping Fussa as a friend for Parker, but after reading all of the literature on introducing dogs and cats, it seems like a LOT of work.  Since we’re not really cat people anyway, I think we’re going to continue looking for a new owner for Fussa.

Sharron said that Fussa meow’d all night long and kept waking her up.  I slept like the dead apparently and didn’t hear a thing.  We’ve got the cat in the office for now as it’s the only room we were willing and able to donate.  Parker has pretty much parked himself outside of the office door and has been demanding to be let in.  We’ve been trying to distract him, but he wants in BAD!  After I got up this morning, I had to put him in his crate downstairs as he was demanding to be let out of the bedroom.  Sharron told me that even after I put him in the crate he still screamed to be let out.  Poor guy.  He doesn’t understand why the cat should make his life change so much.

So, I guess we’ll see if we find the cat a new home or if we end up killing it first.  (kidding!)

Weekend

Jet lag should be pretty bad for me, but honestly, I think only my first day back did I ever suffer any effects.  Weird.

Sharron and I didn’t do too much this weekend.  Our lawn (weeds) needed mowing and our lawn guy couldn’t come until Sunday when it was supposed to rain, so we borrowed the neighbors lawnmower and weedwacker and did it ourselves.  It didn’t take more than an hour and was really pretty nice.

The house itself is almost completely together now.  We still need to hang up our artwork, but I was able to organize the bookshelves yesterday, so that’s one more thing accomplished.  Hooray!

Saw some strange movies yesterday too.  We watched Marie Antionette which was a bit odd and seemed to really just be about food.  :-)  Later we saw Babel which was pretty good, but also pretty strange.  We liked both of them.

Finally, while I was in the states, I went to a coin shop and purchased some 3-ring pages for coins and bills.  I spent a little bit of time starting to fill the coin pages yesterday.  I started with my smushed pennies.  I decided to try and put them in chronological order, so really, that took up the bulk of my time.  I have 45 of them now.  Not bad.  A couple duplicates, but hey, that’s ok as long as it was from multiple visits.  :-)  Lots of coins left to go.  I think I’m going to do my “random” coins first as I really want to organize my “country” specific coins in a specific manner.

Back in Japan

After about 19 days in the states, I’m back home.  Hooray!  I mean, I love the states, but home is where it’s great to be.  Sharron and Parker are here and that’s where I want to be.  :-)

I had started writing a post from Narita airport on my way out of Japan, but I never finished it.  Then in the states, I just had no desire to post anything either.  It’s weird.  I’ve been trying to post more often, even if it’s just something silly.  I read through my old old old entries (not on the site) and when I started posting less frequently, it’s just not a really good picture of what my life was like at the time.  Posting regularly is a really good way to actually document my life for myself.

So ok, I have to mention the 777 that I flew to the states on.  Delta usually gives you a personal TV on international flights.  They give you a guide and say what channel will be playing what movie and when.  Pretty cool.  On this flight there was no guide which was odd.  Also, no way to change the channel.  Odder.  I turned the TV on and discovered a completely on demand video system.  Sooooooo Coooool!  I spent the entire flight watching movies and TV and playing fun flash games like Chainz 2.  THAT is the way to fly!  :-)

I was first in Montgomery from Saturday, 2 June until Sunday, 10 June.  The class was not bad at all and in the evenings I was able to eat at my favorite restaurants, hang out with friends and family.  It was nice.

My next stop was DC.  I went to 2 more classes there.  These were not as good, but did certify that I know what I’m talking about.  Perhaps if I went in to them without as much knowledge as I have I would have enjoyed them more.  As it was, networking with the people there was the best part of it.

Finally, I headed to Tacoma to spend a few days with my parents and sister.  Ah Tacoma.  It’s still nice.  Had a good time there and got to spend fathers day with my dad so that’s nice.

Overall, the best part of the trip was all the shopping I did.  Wow.  I don’t think I’ve spent that much time out shopping ever!  I bought all kinds of things and didn’t buy even more!  :-)

So now it’s back to work to try and figure out what I missed while I was gone.  Yippee!
