Tuesday afternoon I was told that the wing commander wanted to see me in his office at 5 PM. I had bad feelings about what we were going to be discussing and they were strengthened when I saw the vice wing commander in there with him. Sure enough, they wanted to tell me that I’d fallen victim to the Reduction In Force (RIF) and that no later than January 29 I would be separating from the Air Force. Wow, it’s still quite the shock to my system.
I have traveled quite the range of emotions, anger, hate, sadness, despair, depression, excitement, fear, etc.
Wow… Whatever’s next for you guys, I’m thinking good thoughts your way!
Shit, that sucks. I’m really sorry to hear it, man. Definitely keep us posted as you figure out what you’re going to do next.
Aw, man . . . laid off by the military. That is REALLY lame! :(

This is on the list of things that isn’t supposed to happen. You’re supposed to be able to stay in the military until you, like, drive over your CO or something.
Looking forward to hearing where life is going to take you next!
Sorry, dude, that sucks.
working for the gov’t can be a pain in the ass
What!? That’s crazy talk! According to the leadership at Air Force Personnel Command, many of the people not selected for retention (RIF’ed) were “unexpected”. Seems to me that if leadership thinks that the process is broken that they need to redo the process. No?

As I am another officer cut in the RIF, I’d like to know a little about your appeal process. My understanding of the guidance was that there wasn’t one. I’d also like to know about the comments of the AFPC leadership. Can you help a brother out?
