Housework

When we had a handyman at our house to install our new appliances, he told us that at any given time, every house has 19 planned or ongoing projects.  We’re nearing our 2 month anniversary of being in our house, and let me tell you, that’s exactly correct, if not a little low for us.  Both Sharron and I have noticed that although we love working on the house, it seems like we’re almost trapped there and that we don’t do anything else.  Even if we just want to relax and take it easy for awhile, it’s hard to do because all of the projects are sitting there…watching you.  It’s creepy.

Friday Simsbury received around a foot of snow.  It was awesome, crazy and caused us to go to Sears…and buy a snow blower.  Saturday, we set it up and put it to work in the driveway.  Wow, it’s crazy fun to operate.  I’m sure I’ll grow tired of it, but hey, when it’s new, even hard work can be fun right?  The really hard part was trying to clear some of the ice out of our driveway.  It had snowed earlier that week, and then rained the next day causing all of the snow to melt…sorta.  Over night, said melted snow turned into a nice sheet of ice.  I broke up a lot of us, but there are still some large sections lying in wait to get us.  Sharron has fallen 3 times, to my once.  You can tell how big of a project it was from the fact that it took me ALL DAY to clear the driveway.  Crazy!

While I was hard at work outside, our tile installer was hard at work inside grouting the tile in the kitchen.  He was able to get all of the tile grouted and is now complete with that phase.  We need to seal the grout and have transitions installed between rooms, but otherwise it’s complete.  Wow, it looks SO much better than the crappy old linoleum.  A few doors will have to be shaved to work, but that will hopefully just give us an excuse to purchase a circular saw.  :-)

Yesterday, we finished painting the basement hallway and the ceiling in the basement bathroom.  Our basement storage room was finally finished on Saturday (the baseboards were reinstalled) so we moved all of my comic book boxes and toy boxes in to there to get them out of the game room (also in basement).  Then, we hung out with friends for the rest of the day.  That was a much needed vacation for us.  We even went out for dinner (and ate it out, not got take out (Wow, that’s bad English I think)).

Finally, I’ve been researching a new home stereo system.  Sharron and I have agreed that my speakers are just too large to look right in our living room so we need smaller speakers.  My stereo is about 12 years old, so I decided to start looking in to a Home Theater In a Box (HTIB) solution.  Consumer Reports and many audio sites have recommended the Onkyo HT-SR800 and I’m starting to lean in that direction.  Any thoughts from anybody?

Pride

Why do I have such a terrible amount of pride involved with housework?  It always gets me into trouble.  I always think I know how to do something and that I don’t need to listen to anyone’s advice about how something should be done.  When I’m confronted with said advice I’m almost blinded by my stupid pride to the point where even if my solution WOULD have worked, I’m too blind to actually HAVE it work.  The most recent example of this was last week when I was hooking up the washing machine.  Sharron reminded me several times that the hot water hose went to the “H” and the cold water hose went to the “C”.  My pride immediately kicked in.  Thoughts like, “I know how to do this.” went though my head.  It’s easy to tell which hose is right, isn’t it?  This hose is on the left and is cold so it’s screws into the left connection.  (anybody see the missing logic in that sentence?)  Today I got a call from Sharron.  I totally hooked them up backwards and probably ruined all of my work clothes.  They’re supposed to be washed in cold or warm water.  Since I hooked them up backwards though, they were washed in HOT water.

I’m very sorry about this Sharron.  Please forgive me.

I’m always worried that this is going to happen at work.  I think I have an entirely different mindset here though.  I usually approach something from the opposite end, that I don’t know anything.  I’m VERY paranoid that I don’t know what I’m doing so I check and recheck things to make sure I’ve done it right.  Then I ask if I did it right.  I think that’s why I feel so successful and why when I’m at home I’m all full of pride.  Hopefully that’s not pride talking.

What I need to do is find a way to turn that blasted pride off at home and have the same work ethic I have at work.  Easier said than done, but I’ve got to keep trying.

Not Fired!

Today I went to meet with one of my bosses and she told me she’s very pleased with my work.  She then proceeded to give me another project to work on in addition to my current one.  So basically I’ve done well enough in my first month here that I’m not fired.  Woo hoo!  Being employed is good.

Last week Sharron got a call from the movers.  Our stuff was in town.  They told us they could only deliver it on Feb 7, 14 or 21.  All Thursdays.  We wanted it as soon as possible, so we elected to receive it on the 7th.  Of course, I was in a training class that day and couldn’t get out of it, so Sharron bravely went it alone.  She had to deal with the movers, roofers and tilers that day.  Crazy!  At any rate, we got our stuff!

Home cooked meal

Yesterday, Sharron went to the store and picked up many food items.  It seems silly, but coming from overseas you have to re-buy EVERYTHING including catchup, mustard and mayonnaise!  We’ve been slowly buying stuff, but mostly we’ve put off the “essentials” until her stuff came.  This has meant we’ve been eating take out and microwave dinners a lot.  Like since the 10th of December a lot.  A LOT.  What she came home with that I immediately noticed was a jar of Ragu spaghetti sauce.  Oh yeah.  I immediately had a craving for spaghetti.  And so she made it.  And it was good.
