Invasion

Not sure what’s up with me and the crazy dreams lately, but last night it was an alien invasion.  I was in a military unit of some sort and we were fighting the invaders (who looked human) and I was about to be killed…so I surrendered (go me).  The rest of my unit had been captured without surrender, so they were being forced into slave labor while I was being treated as more of a pet.  I kept collaborating with the other surrendees and we began to form a resistance.  By the end of my dream we’d launched our attack and I was killing them aliens.  It felt weird though because they looked human and I was afraid I was just killing regular people.

Football

Yesterday afternoon was the company picnic for Travelers.  I’d been talked by some of my business partners into playing on their flag football team.  They were totally gung ho about it too.  We had 3 practices and even bought t-shirts.  After the first practice, I felt really good about the team.  Almost all of the team had shown up and we mostly were just feeling each others abilities out.  After the second practice, I began to see some problems.  Only 1/2 of the team showed up.  There was no one person in charge of the team.  Everyone had a different idea of what plays we should run and how to do things.  We did finally decide on some plays and a defensive strategy though.  After the third practice, I knew things weren’t going very well for us.  More people showed up and the “team” decided that we should ignore all the work we’d done the previous practice and come up with new ideas.  There was more angst about who should do what.  Somehow I’d even been placed at center on offense.  It was not a sign that boded well for us.

Yesterday at 12:15 was our game.  We did a little practicing again before the game and I found out that again our plays had been changed.  There was more angst.  When the game began though, we came together.  Our team scored first and we were feeling good.  Our opponents were playing at the same level we were and it was a pretty good game.  I didn’t play very well on offense, but I did great at defense (more on that in a bit).  The game had two halves, each being 11 minutes.  The clock only stops during the last minute of each half.  It was a FAST game.  In the last 5 minutes of the second half the score was 7 to 6 with us leading.  We threw an interception and it was run back for a touchdown.  Awhile later we threw another interception which was run back for a touchdown.  Game over man!  Game over!

Before the second interception, we were still hopeful that we could come back.  Here’s where I really am kicking myself.  I was playing defense.  I play loose so that I can gauge where the ball is going better.  The QB moves to throw the ball and I anticipate where it’s going and move in between the ball and the receiver.  Just as the ball is entering my hands, I take my eyes off the ball…and drop it.  F. U. C. K.

I’ve over thought the whole thing in my head and what I think happened is that my mind still thinks I’m 18.  When I was that young, my reflexes were good enough that I probably could have taken my eyes off the ball and still caught it, but not now.  I’ve noticed this a few times in the past few years, but I haven’t really played enough sports to be able to “re-train” my brain.  And so it is.  We lost by a score of like 25 to 7.  While I don’t feel responsible (2 interceptions…) I do feel that I could have turned the tide…if I had just caught the damn ball!

Zombies

I woke up yesterday morning in a cold sweat.  I’d been having a dream about zombies.  Seriously.  There was some kind of outbreak and they were everywhere.  Christian Bale was leading us.  I’d made some kind of zombie weapon and really wanted to show it to Christian Bale, but when I gave it to him, it turned to crap.  I mostly remember the end of my dream.  I was trying to get away but was trapped in a room with concrete walls, like a basement.  They were coming in.  I decided to try and knock myself unconcious so I ran as fast as I could into the wall head first…and woke up.  Eek!  It was about 20 minutes before my alarm was set to go off and I wanted to sleep a little more…but those zombie images really stuck with me.

I did drift back off a little, but of course the damn zombies were still after me.  For some reason, my goal was to destroy a dam.  I knew with certainty that if I could just flood the area, the water would kill all the zombies.  (I don’t think this is right though, I think you have to destroy the brain)  I remember succeeding in my attenmpt to destroy the dam and water being everywhere.  I was trying to find some place that wasn’t underwater and climbed up into a building.  I remember thinking it was great that the zombies were gone and that I could relax…except that I couldn’t…because I would never feel safe again.

It happens to everyone

When you don’t post for awhile, it gets harder and harder to post as you begin to make a mental list of all the things you’d like to post about.  When you estimate how long it will take you, the answer inevitably comes back, “I don’t have time to write that much.” and then you end up delaying even further.

The highlights:

Neil Diamond – Sharron and I went to Boston to see Neil Diamond in Fenway Park.  It was awesome.  This was the first concert I’d ever been to where the crowd was louder than the music.

Dog – We did end up adopting a dog.  Her name was Bella.  She seemed perfect for Parker.  She needed a little bit of obediance traning, but was very nice.  We took her to the vet to have her checked out and we found out that she was pregnant and had serious lyme disease.  All said and done we would have been set back probably over $1,000, for a free dog.  We don’t have a new dog any more.

Hamlet 2 – You probably shouldn’t see this.  Maybe if it’s free on TV.  And you’ve been drinking.  We laughed some, but there are better movies to watch out there.  :-)

Wood Shed – Sharron and I built a shed to house our firewood.  It took us 2 days, but we built it from scratch.  It was fun!

How to find a Dog in Connecticut

When Sharron started her job, we started taking Parker to doggy day care.  I know it sounds silly, but he’s a VERY social dog and he loves interaction.  When Sharron lived in Atlanta, she had to get him a dog to keep him company.  He LOVED doggy day care.  The people there said he was probably their best day care dog.  On a hot day about 6 weeks ago, all of the dogs were inside and they’d let all the big dogs in the with small dogs.  One big dog ended up attacking Parker, even though he submitted, and he ended up needing stitches.  It was pretty bad for us.  We no longer feel we can trust the day care facility as it’s often hot or rainy here so they bring the dogs inside.  Our other solution is to do what Sharron did and get him a dog for some company.  Easier said than done.

We started looking back in January just to see what was out there.  The first place we looked was the Connecticut Humane Society.  We thought we’d at least see 10 dogs and get an idea of what size/type we’d like.  However, they only had 6 dogs.  We thought this was pretty strange.  When we checked again about 6 weeks ago, they had a few more dogs, maybe 12.  They had 2 we were interested in that we’d seen over the Internet.  When we got there though, 1 had been shipped off to “somewhere” (more on this later).  This was pretty mysterious as he was on the Internet as their “Dog of the Week.”  Seemed very strange.  The other dog was very nice and we asked to meet him.  He was a Jack Russel Terrier.  When the attendant came to let us in to his cage, he asked if we’d ever owned a Jack Russel Terrier before.  We haven’t and told him so.  He then told us that we probably shouldn’t meet the dog as they weren’t going to let us adopt him.  Their stance was the Jack Russel’s are highly specialized and require an extraordinary amount of care.  When we told them about our dog and how he’s highly active they just looked at us like we were crazy.  We’ve vowed to not go back to this facility again.

At the same time, Sharron has been researching the different breed rescue groups in the area.  She’s contacted a bunch of them, but many have the same requirement as the humane society:  Breed experience.  A few have been interested in letting us adopt a dog, but when they ask about our house, yard and feeding habits, they get all crazy.  We have a big back yard (.6 acres) that is completely fenced in.  The fence was designed with dogs in mind and to blend in with the forest.  It is not chain link, but instead a vinyl coated metal fence (very similar to chain link).  People don’t seem to like this fence when it’s described and I’m not sure why.  They just can’t seem to wrap their minds around it.  Also, we feed Parker a brand of dog food called Solid Gold.  It is a holistic brand meaning that it doesn’t have any preservatives and is all natural.  The rescue groups also can’t seem to wrap their minds around something that’s not Purina or Alpo and think we’re crazy.  We’ve pretty much given up on them.

This weekend, we went to the Ellington Dog Warden’s (the dog catcher) office to meet a dog named Bella.  She was pretty much perfect for us.  Their only stipulation is that she go to a home with no other dogs.  We brought Parker along just in case and we let the two of them play for awhile.  They got along great.  We filled out an application and we’re hoping that with the attendant’s recommendation we’ll be allowed to adopt her.  However, we’re not holding our breath.

Finally, yesterday we found out that the dog that had been at the Humane Society we’d visited had been shipped to a different Humane Society in southeastern Connecticut.  We called them and they said he was still available, so we jumped into the car with Parker and headed down there.  It took us about 1.5 hours to get there and we were pretty excited to meet him.  When we went inside though, they told us, “Jack?  No, he’s not available for adoption as he’s in quaruntine.”  We told them we’d called and their response was, “You did?  Well, sorry about that.”  That’s it.  We couldn’t even meet him.

We’re pretty much done with dog shelters, humane societies and breed rescue groups in Connecticut.

Mini Florida Vacation

Last Thursday, Sharron and I flew down to Navarre, FL for her brothers wedding.  We’d managed to find this neat little townhouse right on the beach, so even though the wedding was on Saturday, we arrived on Thursday to soak up the sun.  The weather forecast wasn’t looking good, but we lucked out and the only rain we got was right after we got off the plane.  We were LUCKY!  While we didn’t splurge on this trip, we did need to rent a car, so we paid the extra $20 and got a convertible.  We’d been promised a Mustang, but ended up getting a Seabring.  Not quite in the same league, but it was still fun driving around in a convertible.

The real treat of the trip was the townhouse though.  It was pretty skinny, but made up for that by being 2 floors.  The 1st floor was the living area and kitchen while upstairs had the bedroom and master bathroom.  What made it so nice was that the place had recently been remodeled and was really in great condition.  Plus, like I said, it was right on the beach, so we always had a great view of the ocean, and if we wanted to go for a swim, it was right out out back door.  :-)

Sharron already had some snorkeling equipment, so after a quick trip to Walmart, we picked me up a cheap set so we could snorkel together.  The water was pretty perfect for it.  It was pretty shallow for a good ways off the shore and there were plenty of fish around to play with.  At one time we even had a HUGE school of little fish swimming all around us.  It was LOADS of fun!

Saturday was the wedding.  Sharron’s brother Chris married his fiance Janice.  The ceremony was on the beach at a little before sunset.  I would say that it was a nice ceremony, but I think the only people who could hear the preacher were Chris and Janice!  Afterwards they had a nice little reception where we all got to hang out and have cake, so that was nice too.

Sharron had brought along her friend Michelle’s friend Eweness.  We had a good time taking pictures of Eweness the entire trip.  I may put together a silly page for her like I did for Flat Stacey.  We’ll see.  :-)

I’ve never used the wordpress image tool, but I wanted to try it out:

How to Get Lost in the Woods

On Friday, Sharron had asked if we could hike up to Hueblein tower on Saturday morning.  It’s a nice short little hike, so of course I was up for it.  Saturday morning came and we got up to the trail head at around 8:40.  We’d brought Parker along and we really looking forward to it as the tower would be open for us to tour.  The first 1/3 of the hike is the hardest as it’s a pretty steep climb.  After you complete that though, it’s a nice walk along the top of the ridge to the tower.  On our way up that first 1/3, we passed a nice old German lady coming down.  Once we’d reached the next 2/3 on the ridge, we passed her again, still coming down.  She said she was on a loop.  Huh.

We made it to the tower at around 9:40 and had a 20 minute wait for it to open.  It was very nice outside, so we sat and looked out at the Farmington valley and tried to find out house.  It was great.  We got to go in at around 9:55 and I headed up first.  I had a good time and even got some pictures at the top of the tower.  It was a little too hazy, but it was still fun.  Next it was Sharrons turn.  She reported that she liked it too and at around 10:30 we started back down.

At this point, Sharron suggested we try and find the trail that the old German lady had “looped” on.  Sharron doesn’t like to see the same stuff twice, so I figured, “Why not?”  The trial we’d come up on was marked yellow and we found another trailed marked light blue.  We took the light blue trail.  For a good long while, it sure seemed like we were headed in the right direction.  The big difference was that this trail was MUCH harder with more rocks and more of a “hiking” feel to it.  After about an hour, it became clear to us that we were not headed back to our car.  Our options were to keep going down, or to head back up to the tower.  Being out of shape, we did what any good lost hiker would do and headed down.  Another 30 minutes later and we decided we were in trouble.  We got the cell phone out and called our friend John to look up the trail map for us.  He was able to help some, but the there are MANY unmapped trails and we really had no idea where we were headed.

Around this time, we started conserving water.  We’d brought only 1 bottle for us and 1 for Parker.  We figured we needed to drink, but didn’t want to have none left either.  Also, since we were supposed to only be gone 1-2 hours, we had only had a banana each for breakfast.  The plan was to stop for something more hearty on the way home.  As luck would have it though, we found a blackberry bush with a bunch of ripe blackberrys, and made ourselves a nice snack.  :-)

After yet another 30 minutes we finally encountered a trail that looked more used AND a sign that pointed in one direction to Hueblein tower.  We figured the other direction would take us away from the tower and to a parking lot of some kind.  We called our friend John again and told him and his wife Pat where we were and that we’d probably need a ride.  Our hiking had taken us to the reservoir which I had seen from the top of the tower.  It started to sink in how far we had come as it was a LONG way from the tower.  John and Pat knew where the resevoir was and jumped in their car to come get us.  At around 1:00 we finally found the water treatment facility with it’s associated parking lot.  A mountain biker rode by us and we asked him where the main road was.  He said straight ahead and took off again.  As we rounded the corner, of course there was a fork in the road.  Which was straight?

At the fork there was a park bench and a water fountain, so we decided to stay there.  DId I mention that at around 12 or 12:30 that it started thunder storming?  Oh yeah, it was pleasant.  I called Pat and John again to tell them where we were and they said they could find us.  I think they picked us up at about 1:30.

They gave us a ride back to our car.  To give you some perspective, it took us about 15 minutes to drive back to our car.  Ick.  Here’s a map of the area we were in.  The reservoir is not on the map, but if you were to go off the bottom right of it, that’s where it is.  As I said, we started out on yellow and changed to blue.  Not sure what trail we took to get to the reservoir, but here’s a map of the reservoir area.  On the right side of the map is Reservoir 6.  Of the trails coming into the area from the right, I think we were on one of the two to the far right.

When we got home, we stripped off our soaking wet clothing, dried Parker, and went to bed.  We’d picked up a feast at McDonald’s, so we ate that and then pretended the world didn’t exist for the rest of the day.

Early Morning and a 6-day work week

Though today is Monday, yesterday was the official start of my work week.  One of my projects had some stuff going live on the web yesterday, so I got to come in to work at 5:00 AM to work with the implementation team.  Since I am the project manager, I coordinate all of the work and ensure that all the affected agencies are kept in the loop as far as the status goes.  Like all good things, it should only take 3-4 hours but took 6.5 instead.  Gah.

They update the website with changes once a month, but for the most part, I won’t have any changes more than 1-4 times a year.  It all depends on what projects I’m assigned to.  Still sucked big big though.

Didn’t I leave all of this behind in the Air Force?  I guess not.  Oh well, at least it’s not every other month!  :-)

Unpacking

Isn’t it funny how there are different levels of unpacking?  When your stuff arrives at your new home, you unpack it and put it away.  Then, you have to clean up all the crap, before pulling out some stuff (probably decorations) to make the home a home.  Next, you further pull things out and make sure they are put back where they should actually go.  Finally, after said things are where they should actually go, you have to pull them out AGAIN and organize them into some form of coherency.  This is the most painful step because technically, the stuff is where it needs to be, it’s just not in a very usable state.  However, it IS usable, it would just be MORE usable if it were organized.

Sharron and I have been working on this final step all over the house for awhile now.  We tackled all of our holiday decorations this weekend.  It was pretty easy really, but it still took a good long time.

In my spare time, I’ve also been working on organizing all of our books.  Again, pretty easy, just time consuming.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

In the old days, I guess before Sharron and then Parker, I used to sleep in very late on the weekends.  I’d always aspire to be up early on Sunday, but usually get up at around 11.  When Sharron and I got together, I soon found out that she liked to get up earlier than me.  It’s taken me a long while to adjust, but I’ve finally gotten used to it.  Even still, on the weekends we would sleep in late sometimes.  Of course, when Parker finally moved in with us, I discovered that it’s not as easy for him to change his clock on the weekend to not wake up at 6:00 AM.

When we first moved to CT, we had no fence and the only way he could go out was if we took him for a walk.  This meant that I was getting up between 7 and 8 AM to take him outside.  After walking in the freezing cold, there wasn’t much point to going back to bed, so I’d usually just stay up.  Finally one day, after a big yawn, Sharron asked me, “Why don’t you just ignore him?”  My response was that I had no problem ignoring him, it was that he had a hard time ignoring my nose (and biting it).  Based on her advice though, I found that I could roll over and ignore him and he’d leave me alone.

Now, after being here for 6 months and getting used to everything and falling into a routine (a flexible one, but still a routine), I find that I’m waking up at like 8 AM on the weekends anyway.  Go figure.

I’m not sure if it was this weekend, or the previous one, but while Sharron was in the shower, I was sitting in bed watching TV.  I was looking through the listings and found that there were MANY channels that had cartoons listed all morning long!  Spider-Man.  Ninja Turtles.  Heck, even a new Tom and Jerry cartoon!  I couldn’t believe it.  I clearly remembered some conversations with Urn (Kat too maybe) regarding the state of Saturday Morning Cartoons (yes, you SHOULD capitalize all 3 words).  We’d found that there simply weren’t any.  Maybe 1 channel, Fox probably, had them on.  But they weren’t anything special.  Growing up when we did, we both had fond memories of getting up before the parental units and watching cartoons.  Not that there weren’t cartoons on during the week, because there were, but the Saturday Morning Cartoons were something special.  There was no conflict between having to go to school, or maybe going outside to play while there was still daylight.  It was EARLY (probably before 6 AM) and there was no school and still a LOT of daylight left in the day.  It was easy to just sit and watch cartoons all morning.

In the fall there was a Friday night special that most of the channels would air that detailed all of the new cartoons you could expect.  I remember being so excited about the new stuff!  So anyway, it was really a treat to see that Saturday Morning Cartoons had made a comeback.  I have no idea if there are any kids up before 6:00 AM (or for that matter if the cartoons are on that early), but I am glad that at least the opportunity is there for the kids today to share in something I remember so fondly from my childhood.  :-)

On a totally unrelated note, Sharron and I have been working in the game room the last 2 weekends.  We’ve spent more time than we thought we would getting the room in order.  We did a really good job though as the room looks spectacular.  The colors on the walls are perfect and really make the room look brand new.  The ceiling was in such bad shape that it looks amazing with a fresh coat of paint too.  We even replaced all of the light switches and outlets with new white fixtures.  Besides the guest bathroom, this is the first room in the house that we’ve done that in.  It really makes the room look nice.  Only shocked myself 3 times too!

We still need to replace the track lighting and fix the drywall around one of the windows, but otherwise, it’s ready for some gaming.  :-)

Avatars with your replies

Not sure if anyone will care about this but me, but Scott sent me a link to this site, Gravatar, which lets you assign yourself an avatar for WordPress sites.  If you’ll notice, both Scott and I have a picture next to our replies now.  I think it’s pretty cool.
